This goes to show that movie URLs do not need to be long adaptations of movie title dash the movie dot com. Rather, they can pose intrigue and, when paired with a clean display, be very effective. Let's hope this is not the end of good movie URLs.

AreYouObsessed.com
Larry Bak (a man who knows a good web extension when he sees one) weighs in with his first submission. Let's hope he gets obsessed and starts URL-spotting left and right. C'mon Larrio, you could be an URLebrity!

www.fastandfuriousmovie.net
The only thing worse than an alllowercase URL buried at the bottom of the screen for the last 2 seconds of the ad with a slash is an alllowercase Movie URL buried at the bottom of the screen for the last 2 seconds of the ad with dubs and a non-dot-com. (Am I reminding anyone of that CareerBuilder ad?) This URL flashes so fast and furiously across the screen, it's an accident waiting to happen.

DISNEY.COM
At the other end of the Movie URL spectrum is Up. Rather than go with Up-The-Movie.com or some other horrendous URL, the studio opted instead to direct people to Disney.com where an ad is prominently displayed on the left rail for the movie and the trailer auto-plays on the homepage. This URL strategy is definitely on the Up and Up.

DISNEY.COM/WITCHMOUNTAIN
For some reason, Disney decided to get a little goofy with this URL. Not sure why it gave the Pixar flick top billing in terms of URL promotion but trying to hone in on this URL what with the low visibility placement and ALLCAPS format is like trying to find a needle in a, er... witch mountain.

I can't blame these guys for using dot-net. I, of all people, know what it's like when your dot-com is taken. But I wish they hadn't tacked on the dubs and bruying their smile, er... URL in the last frame. Why has it become standard for Movie URLs to be placed above the footer with the studio info and rating. Is the date of the movie release really that much more important to convey than the URL? If so, then why spend so much money on building flashy websites (that, mind you give your film a place to capture pre-release buzz and extend your shelf-life post-release)? Why not instead put all that budget into focus groups around the exact best day and time of the year to release the movie? Am I the only one lost here?

Looks like we're 3 for 3 today with good URLs. Behold the elusive good movie URL -- few and far between, indeed. You may now kiss this URL.

www.sisterhoodofthetravelingpants2.com
Mr. Askew strikes again with this brutallylongalllowercaseurlwitha2attheend. Truth is the choice of domain name here isn't bad at all. It's rare that a studio is able to procure the name of the movie. But burying it in lower case with dubs and all subjects it to the fate of all those other bad movie URLs which people have learned to tune out as they are indecipherable. Whoever wears the pants at this studio should step up and fix this sissy URL.

Tooooo many zeroes. They'd have been better off spelling out Ten Thousand. This pre-historic URL is on the verge of extinction.

WhatIsYourVantagePoint.com
I was surprised by how many movie ads appeared in this year's game. As I've acknowledged, movie URLs ain't easy. 9 times out of 10, the name of the movie is taken. But I hate when studios just tack on a dash-movie. I like what Columbia Pictures did here by drawing you into the plot with their URL. And creating a game around it at their website definitely helps drive it home(page).

Here's that 1 out of 10. Clearly this URL wasn't taken. And the leading caps help each word stand out. Since this movie looks like a Borat rip-off, I'll brand this URL very nice!

And here's the yin to those yangs. Not only does the URL itself stink but the dubs and font color just blend it in to the screen here. Unlike Will Ferrell's short shorts, this URL won't stick.

TheWaterhorse.com
I just got back from a week in Manhattan where there are more URLs per square foot than any other place in the country. Needless to say, the key to standing out amongst the clutter is an URL that's clean, crisp, and clear. This one hits 2 out of 3 which ain't bad. The problem is that the one they miss is the most crucial in a place like Time Square -- the URL is just not clear. It's the same color as the sea and buried at the bottom of the board. In fact, I had to walk around for about 5 minutes just to get an unobstructed view. It's too bad -- this is one of the few movie URLs that has a shot at being remembered. But it's out of sight and, thus, out of mind, leaving this URL all wet.

THEMIST-MOVIE.com
Movie URLs are tough -- I get it. Unless you have a very unique title, there's a good chance TheNameOfYourMovie.com will be taken. But slapping on a dash-movie (I've even seen dash-TheMovie, yikes!) is not the answer. Host the movie page on the studio site (TheMist.MGM.com) or, if your audience fits, on MySpace or the like. Unfortunately, this URL is doomed to be as forgetful as the flick.
