www.chick-fil-aleadercast.com/atlanta

Here's another SkewURL (for the uninitiated, those are URLs spotted by URL-aholic Peter Askew of Search Bound) from Chick-Fil-A . Peter seems to eat there a lot!

This one is a mess of mashed up alllowercase and an ill-advised /slash. As Peter points, out it should've been Chick-Fil-A.com/LeadercastAtlanta or dropped Atlanta altogether and had a drop-down on the landing page.

As it stands, this URL is not chic. It's not ful-fil-ling. And it grades an F not an A.

KeepDelMarClean.org

Mr. Askew checks in with #44 here. He spotted this at Think Tank conference. While I don't love the Spacing Issues staggering the URL across 3 lines, the Leading Caps (which I just learned is technically called Camel Case) and Alternating Fonts more than make up for it. I also love the slogan here. In it's effort to keep it clean, Del Mar is definitely keeping it real.

www.4LEONI.com

Not sure what to make of this one. The only certainly is that the food at this restaurant in Florence was top notch. It’s URL uses the number 4 instead of spelling it out, which matches the brand name so no problem there. It uses ALLCAPS for LEONI which I don’t love but can’t really fault. Again, I’m over the dubs. So that leaves the dot-com and, I guess, at some point you have to choose between appealing to natives and tourists. I suppose natives have less reason to visit the website -- they know where it is, how good the food is, etc. So we’ll give 4 stars to 4 Leoni’s -- both the food and the URLs were prepared and presented well.

f-k.com

Bad URL

Peter Askew checks in with his 37th SkewURL. The man is a one man wreck-URLing machine. And while this cup may be eco-friendly (although I bet the folks over at Beta Cup would have something to say about that), the URL is not exactly reader-friendly. In fact, I'd go so far as say it's f-k'ed up. Iced coffee may go well with a dash of sugar but URLs don't go well with a dash of anything.

www.adidasbasketball.com

Bad URL

Bob Kahns, another longtime URL-aholic but first time "official" URL-spotter, sent this one in. He says, "Of course the w's and no leading caps hurt this one, but otherwise, a good use of unused real estate perhaps?" Agreed, Bob. Had they just used Leading Caps and dropped the dubs, this URL would've been a shoe-in.

proStyle.shoes

Not URL

Nate White sent this in via the Facebook GUBU page. Apparently, this was the logo on the box of a pair of Dockers he bought. Nate called it a NotURL and I like that tag so much I've created a new category for it. These shoes may do it all but they most certainly can't create new TLD's... yet!

DRINKARIZONA.COM

???

OK folks, we've got another SkewURL here and need your help rating it.

Here are Peter's initial thoughts...

"On one hand, I salute them for using a normally abandoned piece of real estate on the juice jug to promote their site.. but when it all comes down to it, I'm a big naysayer on splitting domain names by line.. Since writing the name horizontally would have been a challenge, it seems they could have easily wrapped the name in a semi-circular fashion around the top and had a more effective presentation (in my opinion).. shoot, they may have been able to wrap the domain name twice, once on the top, then once more below, then used the crown image in the middle.."

And my response...

"I think by the BIG BOLD FONT they get the point across that the 3 "words" go together but I agree that a better presentation would've been wrapping. I'm gonna let the community vote on this one."

So what do you think?

Bad URL

My brother, Noah, spotted this Bad URL -- I guess URL-aholism runs in the family! Nice to see him trying to sober up with a cup of joe though.

leye.com

bad URL

My wife and I went out to a very nice Valentine's Day dinner last night. Everything on the menu looked good -- that is, except for this URL. The acronym stands for Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises. But their logo says Lettuce Enterain You Restaurants. And everyone just knows them as Lettuce Entertain You. I can forgive the decision to acronymize here as the full name is a mouthful but not sure why they picked LEYE. How hard could it have been to buy LEY.com? Dude's just got "Hey there" up there. And alllowercase only confuses the matter, making it harder to pick up one the fact that this, indeed, is an acronym/abbreviation -- not to mention, it's always weird to see "You" represented by a "Y" and not a "U." Whoever came up with this didn't have their head in the game. Or shall I say... they're losing green every time someone can't recall this Bad URL? Or perhaps... this URL is not humane, er... romaine. Or, this URL is just the tip of the iceberg. Or, this URL is a real tosser. Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all day.

www.s-bag.com

Bad URL

Here's another SkewURL submitted via Good URL Bad URL's Facebook page. Peter found this on his vaccuum cleaner bag. Who-over came up with this one is, as Tina Fey might say, a real d-bag.

lovebunni.es

Good URL

Here's an interesting one. Richard Longhurst runs this company and sent this in thinking I'd blast it but I actually kind of dig it. Creative use of a country TLD and "don't forget the dot" to help those that might overlook it. This URL's got hops.

schafercondoncarter.com

Bad URL

Saw this coaster at the Houlihan's at 225 N. Michigan in Chicago. That building has a good 10-20 big ad agencies in it so these guys are definitely playing in the lion's den. Methinks they need to come with a little more firepower than this. An all lower case URL with some obscure principal names will not help these guys stand out. They really need a dynamite URL, not a dynamite clip art.

www.bobevansbob-b-q.com

Bad URL

Peter Askew of Domainer's Gazette fame sent this one in. Apparently his "friend" JR spotted it. C'mon, Peter, you can admit you eat at Bob Evans. We won't hold it against you. We already know you're a regular at Chick-fil-a. We will hold this URL against Bob Evans though. Cute bob-b-q pun but string it all together in an URL with your brand name and you get a b-b-b-b-b-b-b-ad URL.

MyPyramid.gov

Good URL

Nothing fancy here. Just some good Leading Caps and a .gov to lend some authority. This URL has peaked.

Bad URL

Don't love the treatment here. It's just akward. Slapping vertical dubs, dots, and coms around a logo does not scream URL. Not sure why they were so insistent on branding the URL around the logo. Frankly, it's a pretty ugly logo. This URL is as square as the box it's printed on.

www.rockstargames.com/iv

Bad URL

First-time contributor, Tarmo Annus, spotted this one on the back of his Grand Theft Auto game box. I've seen them use this URL on billboards too so I know this is not a one-time thing. I hate that this URL is not branded Grand Theft Auto. And I really hate that they're using Roman Numerals. The brain does not process letters in an URL as numbers. They should really pull the plug on this URL rather than leaving it on IV support.

www.handi-craft.com

Bad URL

Sorry for the infrequent posting. As you can imagine, spending time with my baby girl, Eliara, has been cutting into my URL-spotting. It has, however, introduced me to a whole new category of brands sporting Good and (mostly) Bad URLs. For example, check out the URL on this bottle. Now, I know that I'm in the minorty of parents that will actually notice an URL while I'm feeding my child. And I am surely the only who will take a picture of it. So that leaves me as the only one who will actually remember handi-craft.com. The dubs serve to just clutter up an already crowded bottle exterior (that contains much more important info like the number of ounces of formula.) And the all-lower-case-with-dashes make it even more of a clusterf... hey, no cussing around the baby! These guys need to perfect their craft a bit more and start using an URL that's more handy!

splendid life .com

Bad URL

Closet URL-aholic Bryson Meunier spotted this misfit in the kitchen at our office. We've seen some bad spacing before, but this one takes the cake, er... sugar-free dessert. Putting each word in a box makes it most difficult to realize you're looking at an URL here. This URL is ex-splenda-ble.

chick-fil-a.com

Good URL

Peter Askew from Domainer's Gazette was going for the gusto when he sent this one in -- his 3rd Bad URL spot -- but I disagree with him here. Like I pointed out with Slim-Fast, when a brand name has dashes the URL can/should as well. As long as they own the URL without dashes (as Chick-Fil-A does) there is little risk in promoting the URL accordingly -- not to mention the upside of reinforcing the brand name. Bottom line, this URL is not as fowl as you might think.

www.LakeshoreCiao.com

Bad URL

Tello is an Italian restaurant near the lake in South Haven, MI. While I like a good pun as much as the next guy, I'm not sure your average Joe in South Haven is making the chow-Ciao connection, much less remembering what random landmark they chose to precede it in the URL. This URL is dimentico.
